The conferences named in honnor of Walter Kohn, Chemistry Nobel Prize in 1998, bring to Université de Sherbrooke world renown personnalities who generally give a colloquium talk for undergraduates as well as a more specialized talk for researchers. This series of annual conferences is sponsored by the Canada Research Chair in Condensed Matter Physics.

The first speaker, Walter Kohn has many links with Université de Sherbrooke. He has been in Sherbrooke in the forties during the war and many Professors in the department have been supervized by some of his former students.
